Turn an existing document into a reusable guardrail template: Lawlift detects the variable content, converts it into placeholders, conditionals and gender concordance, and generates a questionnaire from it.
Step by step
-
In the Add-in, open Templates from the menu and switch to the Create tab.
-
Select source documents: Use Upload Document(s) to add one or more documents, or Use current document. With several documents, click one to set it as the primary document that the others are merged into. Under Advanced Options you can, for example, Create deterministic template or Suggest additional optional sections. Click Analyze Documents.
-
Verify template details: Review and adjust the AI-suggested Template name, Description, Date Format and Categories, then click Start Templating.

-
Template created: Lawlift merges the content and highlights variable paragraphs for review (yellow = variable in the base document, red = inserted from other documents). Questions are generated automatically from the detected placeholders; use Edit Questionnaire to adjust them.
Good to know
- Deterministic template: consists of text, questions and rules. The rules ensure the correct, approved text block is always used - the result is 100% reliable and always comes out as intended. After a one-time rule setup (and maintenance), even non-specialist staff can work with it, since only reviewed and approved clauses are used. Use Advanced Options → Create deterministic template to produce such a purely rule-based template.
- Guardrail template: consists only of text and a questionnaire; the AI handles the adaptation (simple rules can be stored for the AI to apply). The benefit: no setup effort, no rule planning or maintenance, and high flexibility in use. Because it uses AI, the result is not 100% reliable - so it is intended for legal professionals who can review the output.
- Manage: Find and manage your templates on the Manage tab - search, edit or delete them there.
- Use finished templates via Create a document from a template.
