Word can open PDF files, but it converts them into its own editing format in the process. While a document runs in that mode, the Add-in’s AI features are unavailable - you first need to save it as a Word file (.docx).

Step by step

  1. Open the PDF in Word and launch the Add-in. If the document was opened from a PDF, the Add-in flags it under PDF Document: “This document was opened from a PDF and needs to be converted before AI features can be used.”
  2. Save the document as a Word file: File > Save As > Word Document (.docx).
  3. Open the saved .docx file and launch the Add-in again. The AI features - such as Translate, Anonymize or Apply Formatting - are now available.

Good to know

  • Why conversion is needed: In PDF mode you will see “AI features are not available in this mode.” Only as a true .docx file can the Add-in reliably process structure and text.
  • Check the content: Converting from PDF to Word is not always exact - review layout, tables and paragraphs after converting, before applying AI features.
