The Word Add-in creates a two-column copy of the open document: the original language on the left, a translation on the right. The copy opens in a new window and your original document stays unchanged. The translation runs in the background, so you can keep working while it processes.

Step by step

  1. Open the document you want a bilingual copy of in Word.

  2. In the Add-in, switch to the Edit tab and click Translate.

  3. Choose Create a bilingual copy.

  4. Under Select the second language, choose the language for the right column.

  5. Optional: set the options for the copy (see Good to know).

  6. Click Create Copy. Progress is shown as a percentage. You can close the modal - the copy is created in the background and opens in a new window.

Good to know

  • Number both sides: When enabled, headings and lists are numbered in both columns. Otherwise only the left column is numbered.
  • Add language precedence clause: Adds a clause before the signature block stating that the original (left column) version is legally binding and prevails over the translation.
  • Apply formatting: Keep the document’s current formatting, or re-format the copy with a formatting preset - hardcoded numbering is then replaced by the preset’s numbered styles. See Apply a formatting preset.
  • The original stays unchanged: The bilingual copy opens in a new window; the document you started from is not modified.
  • Incomplete translation: If individual paragraphs could not be translated, the Add-in flags it - their translation column is left empty. Please review the document afterwards.
  • Just need a translation? To translate the document into one language instead of a two-column copy, use Translate a document.
